BOOK ONE
I’ve always used a white board to explain the mathematics, so here are some solutions to the problem
THREE + THREE + FIVE = ELEVEN
Begin with the first E in Eleven. T + T, at the very most, could be 9 + 9 and EL would be 18.
However, there may be a carryover from H + H + F
But the sum of three single digits, at the most will be 9 + 9 + 8 or 27. The largest carryover is a 2 and 9 + 9 (+2) = 20.
Therefore E = 1 or 2
If E = 1, then N = E + E + E = 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 and E = E + E + V = 1 + 1 + 9 and V = 9
Because the largest carryover is a 2, then T = 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8
Then we grind out the numbers that could work.
Here are five solutions:
47511 47811 56711 78211 78411
47511 47811 56711 78211 78411
